21st century english classroom

My feelings of the 21st century english classroom are normal.  They are only normal because i have grown up with all of these things such as facebook, twitter, blogging, the internet as a whole, and cell phones as well.  The funny thing about this blog is that its asking us to describe what we think of as normal, but for you, its the opposite because most of this stuff is new. Because you didnt grow up with this crazy technology, the english classroom of the 21st century is much different than before.
I have already talked about my feelings on blogging so i will start with facebook and twitter.  In the english classroom, facebook and twitter make it really easy to, not only communicate faster, but to obtain information quicker.  People can tweet their feelings about a book or something from class and someone at the same time could post a whole section of a book on facebook or start a group that follows stuff that relates to english.  I use facebook quite often to check what is going on with friends and stuff and there is no doubt that it influences school as well.  I dont have a twitter yet, but i dont really plan on getting one unless i am required to because i dont seem to have a lot of time.  Cell phones are also a huge part of the 21st century english class.  For example, the coolest thing about them is that they are so easy to use.  More specifically, even you, Mrs. Hayes, use it in class.  I think that it is pretty awesome that every time one of us updates their blogs you get an e-mail.  That just makes your job as a teacher easier, which therefore makes the 21st century english class even more fun.

Sparknotes isn't a substitute for not reading

Obviously, the main reason that sparknotes.com or a similar website is not a substitute for reading a book is because it misses the little details.  Sparknotes outlines the summary of each chapter as well as the whole book, but it does miss little  bits and pieces that are essential for understanding the full meaning and theme of the book.  I would go into specifics examples with my book, but I don't want to give anything away.
Another reason why is because you dont get any feeling of self accomplishment or the enjoyment of reading a book by using sparknotes.  I have read all of the Harry Potter books and because they are so long, it makes me feel good that i read a series of books that are almost all about 600 pages long.  Also, if i would have just used sparknotes, i wouldnt have gotten the feeling of what the author had put into the book by spending so much time writing them.
Books are written to be read, not to be shortened into small pieces that explain what some of the key points are.  If the author wanted to give a summary, they wouldnt have put all of the hard work into writing them.  That is why there are things called short stories.  If you like short stories, then use sparknotes, but if you really enjoy reading like I do, then don't use sparknotes for reading novels.  The funny thing is, I will still use sparknotes if i forget to read or something along those lines!

Letters About Literature

Jackson Bates

Dear Nathaniel Hawthorne,
I am very disappointed with your so called famous novel, The Scarlet Letter.  It honestly just rambles on and on forever describing one aspect or characteristic of something that really isn’t even that important.  Also, it was insanely boring.  There was no action whatsoever and the main storyline was too simple.  Yes, adultery was committed, what is the need to remind this to the reader on every page?  Finally, who wants to read about the Puritan times anyway?  They were just a bunch of extremely religious people that thought being perfect was everything.
I learned that you were paid for every word while writing The Scarlet Letter.  That sounds like a pretty nice deal; however, being extremely redundant makes a book horrible.  For example, there were spots in the book where you explained Hester Prynne using a whole chapter.  I could see someone using about two to three good quality paragraphs explaining the main character, but why a whole chapter?  The reader gets too caught up with that character after that anyway.  Then, for the next couple chapters, you forget the conflict of the story and it is hard to remember with all of the pointless descriptions.  In my situation, it made me want to just throw the book at a wall, which I did, because of its redundancy.
Another reason I didn’t like your book, Nathaniel, is because there was no action at all.  It was simply a book with one crime that occurred before the book even started.  There were no intense parts that left me wanting to read more.  How come nobody has made a movie worth watching over The Scarlet Letter?   There was no enthusiasm in the book that also made it boring.  I pictured all of the characters just talking in a steady monotone the whole time.  There really was no emotion and none of the dialogue was interesting either.  I like books that have numerous conflicts throughout the story and the only one in this was the crime of adultery that was committed.
The final reason why I didn’t like your All American Classic book, The Scarlet Letter is because it takes place in the Puritan times.  The main reason why I don’t like the Puritan times is because I did very badly on one of my essays over Puritan life.  The whole Puritan unit was pretty boring to me and reading this just enhanced that feeling.  The Puritans are not a good topic at all.  They just try to be perfect in the eyes of God, even if that means informing the ministers that one of their family members did something illegal.  In The Scarlet Letter, you made Dimmesdale die after he confessed his sins, which really didn’t make much sense to me.
Thank you for your time of reading this letter, even though you’re dead.  I hope that you never write another Puritan book because you didn’t do very well with this one.  Also, I would recommend that being less selfish and writing a more quality book, rather than trying to make a bunch of money will help you out in the future.
Sincerely,
Hater of The Scarlet Letter

Non-Classical Music for Ship Breaker

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_7baOCYg-Q&ob=av2n

I chose to imbed the song, "I Made It" by the Cash Money Heroes.  This song is almost perfect for describing the different situations in Nailer's life.  He started out dreaming of being rich and owning a clipper ship, which are the fastest ships in the book.  Then, after a hurricane, he comes across one that was wrecked and finds only one survivor who just happened to be the daughter of a very rich family from a way better place.  This relates perfectly with the lyrics of the song.
Nailer was born poor and lived on the beach in a little bamboo hut, but after his whole adventure, everything changes.  In the song, they talk about how they used to dream about where they are today, but now they made it.  Also, this is really ironic, Lil' Wayne says something about finding oil and getting rich, which actually happened to one of the characters in the beginning of the book.  Nailer's world is one in which resources are depleted so, finding oil would make him rich and he always dreamed of finding some "lucky strike."  Not only is this a good song, but it relates to the book in many ways.  Thanks for letting us choose a non-classical song for this blog because it really opened up the choices and I didn't really know many classical songs.

2nd Quarter Follow and Respond

Hey alex, i almost agree with you 100% about how i felt about the whole blogging assignment. I really liked it at first, but then after a little while and the grades came out, my feelings changed quite a bit. Also, like you, i can't wait to video chat with another class. I think that that will be pretty awesome. Ive never even skyped before and it looks pretty cool. I think you did a nice job with this blog, not only because you added lots of information, but you explained all of your opinions and that's what it's all about.
Hey Brandon, I really liked your letter to the author of The Great Gatsby.  It looked like you really enjoyed his book and explained why in almost every way possible.  I also wanted to read your letters about literature because i might want to read The Great Gatsby for my third quarter book.  I have heard that it is a classic and you said that you really liked it, so i think that's what i'll choose after christmas.
Hey Sarah i cant believe how fast school has been this year either!  We are almost to christmas, which means that the second quarter is almost over.  That leaves only 6 quarters of high school left!!!  I was also kind of disappointed with my grades as well so in the future i will work a lot harder and im sure you will too.  I really liked your blog and cant wait to learn about your book.

Quarter Uno Blog Reflection!!!

Overall, my grade for the first quarter blogs was ok.  It wasnt that great and i wasnt extremely happy with it, but I got an A for the quarter.  I would have liked better than a B- on my blog so i will just have to try a lot harder this quarter!  I think that my stronger blogs from last quarter were the animoto and the vlog because i enjoyed them the most so i put in the most effort towards them.  If i would have put forth the same amount of effort towards the other blogs, I would have definately gotten a better grade.  One point of weakness that I had was when i didn't write long enough paragraphs that were lacking detail.  I also could have done the blogs when they were assigned instead of waiting until the last minute.  I think that some of the blogs were rushed but that won't be the case this quarter.
Blogging this year has been fun for the most part.  Making the vlogs and animotos is probably the most fun.  I don't normally make videos so it was cool to watch myself talk about the books that i have read.  Some of the blogs, however, i thought were just kind of boring.  For example, the website blog was in my opinion very repetitve.  I felt like i was finding the same information just on different sites and that only about 5 were quality sites pertaining to my book.  That's why i really liked how you let us choose the blogs for this quarters assignment, and i wont be doing a website blog this quarter if you were wondering.  Im looking forward to having fun choosing the blogs and can't wait to do the Letters About Literature.
For this quarter, I will be reading Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi.  I saw that a couple people read this last quarter and it is really good so far.  It is about a teenage boy like myself, and how he has a hard life because it takes place in the future and almost all of the resources like oil are depleted and must be scavenged for.  He has to work very hard and keep his job otherwise, well i dont know yet because i havent read it all!  Keep reading my posts to find out more on Ship Breaker.

Blog #6 Websites

www.jgrisham.com/books

This website is about the author.  You can e-mail him and send him messages whenever you want.  If there are any questions regarding Theodore Boone Kid Lawyer then you can just ask him on this site!

www.theodoreboone.com

This website is actually really cool! It is like a website just for my book.  It also turns out that there is a sequal toTheodore Boone Kid Lawyer and it is shown on this site!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Boone:_Kid_Lawyer

Wikipedia has everything!  This website can show you anything you would want to know about my book.  It gives the plot summary and any other part of the book you would need.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fbeoKBIR38

This website is really cool because you can watch the trailer for the book.  It is really exciting to see it in video rather than words.  I really liked this video and i hope you do too.

www.inmagine.com/searchterms/court_room.html

This website shows pretty much the whole setting whenever it comes to the courtroom.  There is the seat in which the judge sits on and the general public as well as the jury.  I really like how these photos represent the setting of my book.

photobucket.com/images/courtroom/

This website is almost perfect whenever it comes to the setting.  This site contains over 1,000 photos of courtrooms and everything inside them.  I hope you can get an image for the setting by looking over these pictures.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704575304575296942895299172.html

I really like this site because it contains a book review but it really goes in depth on the author as well.  John Grisham is a very good author when it comes to writing children type books like this one.  The writer of this site tells how the main events happen but in a really funny way and he describes the book as "flat", i dont agree.

http://bestsellers.about.com/od/bookfilmlistsbyauthor/a/grisham_biblio.htm

This website contains all of the bestseller books that John Grisham, the author of my book, has written.  If you scroll down you will find my book.  There is some pictures and information on Theodore Boone Kid Lawyer.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theodore_Boone:_The_Abduction

After reading my book, you will have to read the sequal.  This site contains lots of information regarding the second book in this series.  I cant wait to read it myself.

http://www.amazon.com/Theodore-Boone-Lawyer-John-Grisham/dp/0525423842

This site is amazing because you can actually buy the book on this site.  Amazon is a great place to buy books and then you get it in the mail.  Im considering buying this book after we start the next one so that my family can read it too!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judge

This site should be used to identify the significance of the different types of jobs that are involved in court.  This one describes what the judges do, and it is important to know before reading Theodore Boone Kid Lawyer.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Courtroom

I really like this site because it gives all of the information needed about who sits where in the courtroom.  For example, the judge is in the middle and explains why the defendant is guilty just like in my book.  Knowing background information from this site is very helpful.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trial

Knowing the description of a trial is pretty much the key to this book.  The main point of the book is trying to figure out if this man is guilty or innocent via a trial.  Theodore uses his skills as a young detective to figure this out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illegal_immigration_to_the_United_States

One of the most important characters is an illegal immigrant.  That is someone who is not legally a citizen of the united states and isn't supposed to be here.  In the book he is a key witness but if his name is said, he will go to jail!

http://nycourts.gov/lawlibraries/glossary.shtml

This site defines and shows the use of all of the legal terms that are mentioned in this book.  Knowing these would be very beneficial to understanding the full meaning and outcome of the events that happen during the story.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawyer

This website shows exactly what lawyers do.  Because Theo's parents are both lawyers, this is a great site to surf to find information about lawyers.  This is also good because lawyer is in the title!

This trailer is perfect for showing the main points of the book.  Even though it was done by a fifth grader, you can still identify the characters and summary.  If you get confused with the story, watch the trailer to help.

This summary is perfect for explaining everything there is to know about this book.  The writer of this summary included everything .  If you dont know if you want to read this book, read this summary and you will probably want to read it.

This biography about the author of Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer, John Grisham, really helps you get to know the point of view and writing style that he uses in his books.  I really liked reading about his life in this biography.  Now i want to read more books written by him!

The really cool thing about this website is that you really get to see the consequences for murder which is exactly what happens in the story.  I really like this site because it tells you everything that you need to know about the different types and how much time you get in prison.  Look at this site for information about murder and murder trials.

Blog # 4 follow other blogs

Hey Mrs. Hayes it wouldnt let me post the comment under their post so i just put them here.
Hey Alex i really like these pictures and i like the way that you combined them to help show what your book is about.  These pictures really help illustrate the meaning of the book and it makes me want to go out and buy/read it right now!  The pictures look really interesting and the topic of the book looks really cool.  Im pretty sure that i will choose this book for my second quarter reading and cant wait!
Hey Brandon, this song is perfect for describing your book!  I have seen the movie and this song helps me relate to the movie.  Im thinking that i will either read this book for my second quarter or my third quarter choice but i can't decide.  I like the way that you described the theme of the song and matched it to specific examples in the book which is exactly what the prompt said.  Good job!
Hey Sarah! I really liked all of the pictures that you used to explain the setting and actions of the characters in your book.  This book looks really interesting based on all of the pictures and i dont know if i would read it but i might have to give it a try.  I really like the different types of pictures you used and the explanations of what they are really help me understand what the book is about and help others decide if they want to read it.  Good job, your post is very informative through pictures!

Theodor Boone with Tunes

http://www.classicalconnect.com/#/browse/Saxophone

For some reason the song wouldnt embed correctly so i just posted the site to find it on.  This music by Gary Noland is perfect for describing my book because there are so many different instruments that are used in this piece, just like how there are many different exciting parts that occur in my book.  For exampl, the fast play of the saxophone could represent the trial in Theodore Boone Kid Lawyer because it has lots of action.  Thats how all of the different types of instruments are used to relate to the book that i chose.
Another reason why this music relates to my book is the tempo and speed of the music.  The music starts out kind of slow just like the book, but it eventually gets really fast and energetic exactly like the story.  An example would be when Theo figures out the real truth of the guy that is being tried in court but doesn't know what to do.  The rest of the song is pretty fast and is just like the book because it doesn't really slow down until the end.  That is why this music by Gary Noland is a perfect choice to represent Theodore Boone Kid Lawyer

Blog # 1- Jackson Bates

Hello, my name is Jackson Bates, and i have never blogged anything before in my life!  I guess that theres a first for everything right?  So far, I feel pretty excited about this assignment because i dont normaly read a lot.  I think this could be a fun way to read and incorporate the use of blogging in a creative and educational way.  The read for a lifetime list is actually looking good this year, and theres a good number of books i wouldn't mind reading.  For example, i have already read The Boy Who Dared and i am looking forward to reading more.  Also, i think that this whole blogging experience will be beneficial for me in the future and learning how to post stuff on the internet.  This years english 3 class is going to be very fun and I'm looking forward to blogging and reading books from this years list.
This year, the purpose of blogging online is to get us to explain the importance of the book that we are currently reading and also to learn how to use a blogging site.  The book that i will be reading is called Theodore Boone: Kid Lawyer.  This book is already getting interesting, even though i haven't read that much of it yet.  I am looking forward to reading it because i like mystery type books.  I also chose this book because it was a lot more suspenseful than the others in my opinion.  Because everyone in this class is blogging, it will also be really cool to find out what everyone else is reading.  It will also help me choose my next book.  Hearing about all of the books will be really cool and i cant wait to start!
There could be many different types of blog topics to choose from, and because i havent read very much of my book, i don't really know what some good blogging topics would be.  Maybe some good topics would be to explain the main characters traits in each persons book or maybe the setting and time periods of each book.  This way we dont get the main point of the books, we get a little taste that may force us to pick that book for our next one.  I am looking forward to this assignment and i cant wait to get started.
